Renewable energy does take up a lot of space. But often when we look at competing types of power generation we forget the supply chain. For coal the cola mine, shipping/rail to move the coal and then the disposal of the ash. For gas the well and then the pipeline.
Of course with any centralised power generation site you also need wires to get the power to homes and businesses.
