With a little effort we can reduce our energy use at home. Energy efficient light bulbs, a degree lower on the heating, switching off the odd stand-by appliance will all help. But will this save energy? Why not I hear you cry! Well what will you do with the money you save? A drive to the shops, a meal out for two, or a vacation away from home?

The problem is you see that saving energy also saves money. Money that we are then free to spend in another way. The more we save the more we have to spend. Perhaps there is another way. What can we do with our money that doesn’t use more energy? Possibly buy some solar panels or a wind generator and then multiply the savings we make. I guess you are already ahead of me – what then do you do with the money you save? Well perhaps the only answer is to spend wisely on ethical green products and keep the money flowing in the economy towards products and services that are green. Yes spending the money to support the green economy is the only way to go

Last week we visited the Rural Centre - a museum of village life. The museum is near Frensham in Surrey, UK. The 100 year old windpump provided the water supply for Copse Farm at Holmwood, six miles south of Dorking, until at least the 1960s. It then stood out of use but undamaged until the great storm of 16th October 1987.

The ten foot diameter fan was then blown to earth and it was in this condition that the Surrey Industrial history Group found it and decided to restore it. The farmer gladly presented it to the group and the museum and thus it became a landmark for the Rural Life Centre.

It is a hybrid pump, with parts from Climax(the working mechanism) and Duke & Ockenden (DANDO-the tower). What makes this pump unusual and particularly attractive is its wrought iron decoration and eiffelation (the main supports are curved like the Eiffel Tower).

Such windpumps were once a common sight in the country providing water for livestock in remote locations from, often quite shallow. wells.
